Book Review: The Divergent Series

I’m pretty sure that every teen has heard of this dystopian-ized series written by Veronica Roth.

Basically, the three stories include Tris Prior’s perspective of the future Chicago. There are 5 factions that run the society. Erudite: the smarty-pants (intelligent), Candor: the loud-mouths (honest), Amity: the hippies (peaceful), Dauntless: the show-offs (brave), and Abnegation: the generous (selfless). Each faction plays a vital role in making sure the society runs smooth. You also have the factionless, which are the people that don’t fit into any faction for various reasons. Tris is 16 and that means it is time for her to pick the faction that reflects her real personality and the faction that she will stay in for the rest of her life. However, there are some evil plans that are in the making which will change Chicago for the good, or destroy Chicago for the worse.

The 5 factions that divide the society based on their personality.

Divergent vs The Hunger Games

I prefer this series more than its competitor, The Hunger Games, which is quiet similar since both have to do with overthrowing the corrupt government. Both books have very unique ideas for their fake world, which I think, is what made these books sooo popular. Once you open the page of one of these books, you’re basically transported to a whole new world. That’s how well thought out they are. Also in common, is the budding romances that come with these novels that make it hard to put down. Hence, why you mainly only see teenage girls reading these very popular books.

For me, The Hunger Games novels were quite confusing… don’t get me wrong, there were A LOT of parts in the Divergent books that I didn’t really get. But, for some reason I always found myself wanting to find time to read the Divergent Series. It wasn’t really the same for The Hunger Games… I found the plot to be moving at a slow pace and maybe that’s why I wasn’t a huge fan of the books. I liked the main setting of THG, which was having a tribute being picked from each district and fighting for their survival as mass entertainment. And maybe I also kinda liked the romance of Peeta and Katniss…? But, you can’t beat Tris and Four’s relationship. I mean, come on.

The Final Verdict

Now for the final grading, I give the Divergent Series a whopping 4 out of 5 stars. I really do the love the books. You start to love all the characters, good and bad, and you really get to know them throughout the 3 novels. I adore the relationships between all of them and the way the whole plot lines throughout the books come together. I didn’t give it full 5 stars, mainly because there were quite a few parts in all 3 books which didn’t make sense to me. However, there never was a part in the book which I felt went really slow… it was well written and there was always something happening. Also, the way Allegiant ends is something I wish never happened. That’s why one star is cut.

The Divergent Movies

The Divergent series also have there very own movies. If you didn’t know that, I don’t know which world you have been living in. 3 movies have been made and the 4th one comes out next year. Can I just say, the movie casting is on point. They really help bring their characters to life and put all the words in a picture form.  If you have read the books, please do watch the movies and tell me what you think about them.
